I’ve just cried my way through the last few episodes of a TV show about American high school football, what on earth is that all about?
This is an astonishingly good show, it’s beautifully written and acted and directed with a very striking documentary style. It takes a subject that I have no interest or knowledge in and makes it exciting and engaging. Much like shows like the West Wing it doesn’t matter that you don’t know what’s technically going on, you can see the passion in the characters, hear the power in the music and just Get It.
The only negative thing I can say is that occasionally the plotting drifts into lazy cliché. I’m also a bit concerned with how sustainable the show is, kids leave school and people move on. They’re going to have to aggressively pursue new characters and keep things fresh. But if this show only lasts a limited number of seasons, I’ll be satisfied with that. It is one of the best all round shows on television. Get over the subject and just watch it.
