Hotel Babylon: Season 1

When did British TV get so cool and funky? I thought Hustle may have been a fluke, but Hotel Babylon backs up the trend. Once again it’s a wonderfully slick series with amazing production values shining through in the editing, design, music and the beautiful cut scenes showing London. It’s a lot of fun to watch, always managing to fall the right side of farce and silliness. If anything it’s the drama that occasionally becomes a little melodramatic, particularly the last 5 minutes or so of the series. I hope that’s not a sign for the next season, as it left a bit of a bad taste in the mouth. But the other 475 minutes were absolutely wonderful.

DVD Special Features
There’s an energetic and interesting commentary on the first episode that reveals a lot of behind the scenes bits and bobs and some of the philosophy that goes into the show’s creation. There’s a good collection of little featurettes as well which are a little gushing in places, but enjoyable to watch.
