This is a pretty unremarkable little procedural show, amiable characters and stories that drift along in a pretty disposable way. The only outstanding thing about this show is Nathan Fillian in the title role, which turns the show from being background noise into something with a bit of spark. Fillion is utterly charming and a lot of fun, the relationships with his mother and daughter are very natural and lovely to watch. I could do without the implied “will they won’t they” relationship with his female partner, hopefully they’ll settle on “won’t” and leave it alone.
